This week I would like to discuss the coaching style of many good managers I have worked with in the past. I myself have had the pleasure of managing teams and know all too well the challenge involved in coaching inexperienced staff with bundles of potential and then turning them into highly productive team members.

The key point in my opinion is honesty. Managers that make excellent coaches will openly correct mistakes made by inexperienced members of their team with clear guidance on the lessons to be learnt in future. This can be shocking to some, as open, honest feedback is not always easy to swallow. However it does mean that those that are willing to learn know where they stand.  Good coaches are also quick to give praise where praise is due and this creates a level of respect other managers can only dream of.

A manager that coaches in this way may not always be liked. They will not be everyone’s best friend. But they will be respected and will get results from their team in ways other managers cannot.  An excellent example of this is Jose Mourinho, one of the best football managers in the world. He is notorious for winning the FIFA Champions League with a team of inexperienced players while at FC Porto.

From my experience Managers that have a poor coaching style tend to praise little. They are quick to criticise without offering any advice on how to improve in future or they just get angry without communicating at all. Their only hope of having a team that can deliver is to bring in experienced staff as anyone that requires coaching will either be looking for new opportunities or of a poor calibre.

I am interested to hear your thoughts on the above coaching style. Would you agree that this approach always works?
