When the Fire's Out

Often when managing a project you come across a mixed bunch of individuals that you have to work with. Some are super enthusiastic, others are not bothered either way and then you have those that have lost the motivation for the job. Those that have lost the fire and motivation for the job are a challenge that needs to be tackled in order for the project to be successful.

The best approach I have found is to speak to the de-motivated individual on a one to one basis and understand why they are not performing as they should. After all, nobody goes to work with the intention of doing a bad job. By understanding their reasons, there is a chance of dealing with them and re-igniting their motivation for the job. Their reasons may be frustration of not being empowered to do a good job in the past, micro managed, not having the tools to perform or not being trained and developed. I have seen supposedly “poor” employees quickly transform into shining stars by dealing with such issues.

There are those however where no amount of reasoning will work. Their fire for the job went out a long time ago and the only option left is to remove them from the organisation. This is a last resort in my opinion, but a necessary one when all other options have been tried.
